GAF Roofing: The Pomona Owner’s Guide

GAF roof repair in Pomona typically runs $400-$1,800 for standard repairs and $8,000-$20,000 for full replacement, with most GAF shingle repairs completed in a single visit. We stock GAF Timberline HDZ, ArmorShield II, and Grand Canyon series shingles on our Pomona trucks, plus matching ridge caps, underlayment, and starter strips. Most owners discover a problem after a Santa Ana wind event or the first hard rain in November, when a few lifted shingles turn into a ceiling stain.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

GAF prints the series name on the back of every shingle, usually in a repeating stamp near the tar line. In Pomona, we see four lines most often: Timberline HDZ (the laminated architectural shingle with the StrikeZone nailing area), Timberline UHD (ultra-high definition, thicker at the butt edge), Grand Sequoia (the oversized designer shingle), and the discontinued Timberline Prestique 40, which still covers plenty of roofs built during the 2005-2012 boom.

The compatibility gotcha: GAF changed its ridge vent width in 2019 from 10 inches to 12 inches for the Cobra series. If your roof was built before then and you’re patching a ridge section, the new Cobra Snow Country won’t seat properly without extending the slot. We carry both widths. For underlayment, GAF’s FeltBuster synthetic is interchangeable with Deck-Armor in most Pomona code applications, but the city inspector will flag FeltBuster on tile-adjacent repairs because it lacks the slip resistance rating for clay profiles. We document which underlayment is on your roof before we quote, not after we tear off.

OEM versus aftermarket: GAF’s Timbertex ridge caps color-match to the shingle granule blend exactly; aftermarket ridge caps from Atlas or CertainTeed often read slightly off under Pomona’s harsh afternoon sun. For a repair smaller than three squares, the price difference is usually $80-$120 in materials - we quote both and let the owner decide.

Signs Your GAF Roofing Is Failing

Signs Your GAF Roofing Is Failing
  • Granule loss in gutters or downspout splash blocks. GAF shingles shed granules fastest in the first two years, but heavy loss after year five means the asphalt binder is oxidizing. In Pomona’s inland heat, we’ve measured substrate temperatures above 160°F on south-facing pitches, which accelerates this.
  • Shingle tabs curling or clawing upward. This happens when the bottom edge shrinks faster than the top, usually from poor attic ventilation. GAF’s limited warranty requires 1 square foot of net free vent area per 150 square feet of attic floor - many Pomona tract homes from the 1980s run half that.
  • Cracks running through the shingle body, not just the surface. Thermal cycling in the San Gabriel Valley, where 45°F mornings hit 95°F by afternoon, fatigues the fiberglass mat. GAF’s standard warranty covers this only if the shingle was installed with six nails per tab in wind-prone zones.
  • Flashing separation at wall or chimney junctions. GAF’s WeatherWatch leak barrier works, but it needs 6-inch overlaps. We find corners cut on fast builds near the Fairplex, where crews ran 4-inch laps to save a roll.
  • Sagging in the roof plane between trusses. This is almost never the shingle - it’s the deck, often 3/8-inch OSB in older Pomona homes that can’t handle a second layer. GAF requires 7/16-inch minimum for nailing zone integrity; anything less and we strip to the rafters.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Roof repair in Pomona runs $400-$1,800 depending on how many squares we’re touching and whether the deck is involved. A standard GAF Timberline HDZ repair - three to five shingles, matching ridge cap, one tube of sealant, and disposal - lands around $650-$950. Full replacement with GAF System Plus warranty coverage, which requires four qualifying accessories (we typically specify Deck-Armor, Cobra ridge vent, WeatherWatch at valleys and penetrations, and Timbertex ridge caps), ranges $8,000-$20,000 for a 2,000-square-foot home in the Lincoln Park or Mayfair area.

What drives the spread: pitch (anything over 6/12 adds labor), layers to strip (Pomona allows two; we charge per layer), and whether the fascia or soffit needs repair after we expose it. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, the written price includes all of this - no change order unless you add scope. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers workmanship; GAF’s System Plus adds 50 years on materials and a 10-year no-dollar-limit workmanship warranty backed by GAF directly. We register it for you.

Here’s what you can safely check from the ground or a stable ladder: gutter granule load, visible shingle lift at the rake edge, and whether your attic vents are blocked by insulation. Binoculars and a flashlight are enough.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong: walking a composite shingle roof in Pomona’s summer heat softens the asphalt and scuffs granules you can’t replace. Worse, the step flashing at walls requires removing siding courses to do right, and valley weave patterns have a handedness - backwards and the water runs the wrong way. The real risk is the fall. Even a single-story gable in the Westmont area has a 10-foot eave height, and roof cement on a hot day is slicker than it looks.
