What goes wrong past that point: removing a block-and-tackle balance without supporting the sash first lets the weight drop - it’s 15-30 pounds of glass, and the frame is aluminum or vinyl, not forgiving. Replacing an IGU requires breaking the glazing bead without cracking the surround, then rebedding with the right spacing tape and sealant.
